Anora is whimsical and strange— she is life and decay, glitter and gore, the summer sky amid the inky darkness. She’s a bit airheaded, but bright and clever, and is committed to her studies. She’s a ray of sunshine— bubbly, blooming, and optimistic, with nothing but love in her heart for others. She occasionally enters trance-like episodes of dissociation, where hours would pass without her realizing— staring at the moon, gazing at the river, dancing in her room, flipping through her tomes page by page. She’s gentle and naive, with a childlike wonder about her that allows her to see the beauty in everything, even if it’s gross and dead and decayed. [break][break]

Anora’s mission is to master necromancy. She wants to spare others the pain of losing those she loves… She believes everyone and everything deserves to continue the life they were robbed of. She understands the ethical dilemma of her mission— in her imperfect resurrection, she creates more Shades, potentially damning them to their fate, but the softness of her heart compels her to try anyway. She has a particular affection for animals and habitually resurrects them as pets and companions.

Anora is the only daughter of Kehru and Senri Vauleaux, both powerful Shades who hold great influence and prominence in Avarell. Kehru holds a seat on the Gloomheart Court, and provides a great amount of support and protection for Shades all across Sestyra, having formerly opposed conflict during the Dusk War and taking a stance of neutrality and non-violence. Anora grew up in her family’s large estate, Sunfall, located in a deep valley in the Western part of Avarell, covered in a dark shroud with protective wards on every corner of the property… it is a grand castle only spoken of in fairy tales, fit for the princess raised within. Anora was spoiled rotten— treasured dearly by her family and staff, who could never say no to her. Despite having just about anything she could ever want, Anora remained humble and meek and never needed much to be happy. She was content in her family’s garden and among her books, escaping into her imagination, where she visited worlds beyond her own. As a Shade, she was shielded from the reality of her condition, where blood and flesh were not only preferred for consumption, but entirely necessary to survive. Her parents didn’t want her to have to rely on feeding on people to survive, especially after both strived to solve the issue of ethical consumption (and funded the construction of food banks throughout the continent), so Anora was given blood and flesh disguised as sweet pastries and cakes, remaining oblivious for much of her life. She became close friends with the Lucanis, who were the only other children near her age that she knew. She thought of them like the siblings she never had, possessing a fondness for them that would only grow with time. [break][break]

Even as Anora’s parents sheltered her from the outside world, it was inevitable that Anora would encounter death at some point— this happened at a fairly young age, when she had seen a dead bird in her garden. It took only the touch of her finger for the bird to start twitching, nervous system ignited by her magic. Thus began her obsession with death, which overtook her entirely. She turned to independent studies on necromancy, poring through her family’s tomes with a strange enthusiasm for anything she could find about the topic. By the time she was a teenager, she had begun to make companions and pets of resurrected birds and rodents found around her garden, all of who she treasured dearly. She put them back together, fixing snapped wings and sewing closed wounds that will never heal. She even showed such kindness to insects— meticulously repairing torn wings and putting needle-thin splints on spindly legs. To her, life was sacred— and undead life especially so. There was the issue of her potentially creating new Shades, a concern voiced by her mother after seeing what their kinsmen endure after decades and centuries of bearing their respective curses. Anora didn’t care— it was just animals, anyway, and she lacked the skill to bring back whole people… which became a future ambition she would go on to study formally. [break][break]

When she came of age, she knew she wanted to go to a proper institution to further her studies. She wanted to become more than just the heiress to her house, despite the expectations placed upon her by her mother, who expected Anora to succeed her. Anora wasn’t suitable for court and politics— she lacked social grace and was caught up in her own world. She was clumsy and messy, and didn’t understand that it was improper to talk about resurrecting dead rats at her family’s grand banquets. All she cared about was her studies. [break][break]

Her parents agreed to send her to Pont-Ciel’s Conservatory for study— it was closer to home than the Mage Academy in Fainnard, and the Gloomheart Court held more sway in the City of Innovation. Anora was an aspiring scientist— necromancy was not just a magical art, but a science of its own. She now commits much of her time to her practice, operating at night where she could sneak into graveyards and the Catacombs without drawing much attention to herself. Where she once wore ornate, spring-colored dresses, she now wears subtle gowns in black, disguising herself as an evening mourner while she robs forgotten graves for spare parts. [break][break]
