My name is Shouichi Kanoe. For five years, I toiled endlessly as a sell sword with one goal: survive. Well two if you count making enough money to keep my old man afloat. Now I will fulfill my father's living wish, to find my brother and clear his name. To do this I must become someone else, I must become something else.
Although at this point in time, that part had been going a little slowly...
"Ow... I don't get the point of all these tests."
I protested as the doc pulled my blood. The doc placed my blood on some gem enlayed device. I wasn't quite sure what it was called, but he sure seemed to like feeding it my blood especially after testing. He said it was to make sure I was "safe" but he's literally stabbing me with a pointy object. But you know these brain guys, they never make sense.
"Shouichi, I've told you before. I'm analyzing your blood for traces of-"
Before the doc could continue, the siren started blaring. I hadn't heard that specific siren before but the doc seemed concerned. He ran to a crystal as it displayed a feed of a meteor hurtling toward the continent. As if on queue the faces of many other scientists and important looking people began to be displayed by the crystal. A smug looking professor spoke up.
"At it's current trajectory, it'll strike the Free Territories in approximately 15 minutes. Nothing of importance was loss this day."
Another exacerbated scientist said, "Speak for yourself! I had a 3 month long experiment I'll have to start all over again!"
The doc and his assistant couldn't even get a word in edgewise, but I couldn't restrain myself.
"WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE?!"
That got them to shut up for just a second, until they burst out laughing. "Where did you get this kid, Erskine?"
"We're obviously joking child. Gravitus the Gravity Mage will just reverse the gravity on the asteroid to send it away."
"Gravitus fell down the stairs this morning and stubbed his toe. He's taking a sick day."
"Well what about Yeetus, the Strong Mage."
"Are you kidding me? He's booked out on catastrophic events for months."
I stood in disbelief as they argued so disconnectedly. As if a METEOR CRASHING INTO THE CONTINENT AND KILLING PEOPLE wasn't going to affect them. I know the nomadic tribes in the free territories are often looked down, but there had to be a line somewhere right? They just talked about it like it was someone else's problem. I started making my way towards the hanger. The doc and his assistant began following me.
"Shouichi, what are you thinking. We're not done testing. You can't even fly." The doc protested, but I wasn't taking no for an answer.
"I KNOW PEOPLE IN THE FREE TERRITORIES!" I thrust my fist into the air, energy bursting from the magitech gem strapped to my wrist. In a glow of light magitech armor began to form around my body. I couldn't help but think back to the countless people I had met in the free territories. That crazy old martial arts master who taught me to hone my senses, that mother and her child I saved from the pack of wolves, or even that tribe of angry bird people that wanted to eat me at first, but very politely decided not to. There were so many people that were going to be affected by this if I didn't do anything. My suit completed around me as I pointed at the doc's latest project, the Launcher Tube. "Wasn't that made so that I could be sent anywhere, at anytime?!"
The doc scratched his head sheepishly, starting to realize I wasn't budging. "Shouichi... it's never been tested, you could get hurt."
"That's always been part of the risk," I thought back to my time as a sell sword, sometimes working just in exchange for food. I'd gotten hurt back then, but I never let it prevent me from finishing my job. "I'm just better equipped to protect myself, and everyone else now. Thanks to you doc."
The doc turned around. I assumed he was about ready to pull his hair out, but instead he said, "Prepare the launcher tube."
His assistant looked shocked for a moment but complied with the doc while asking him a soft, "Are you sure?"
The doc turned around looking like he was ready to burst a blood vessel, "NO I'M NOT SURE, BUT BEFORE I CHANGE MY MIND OR HE RUNS OFF DOING SOMETHING STUPIDER, PREPARE THE LAUNCHER TUBE."
Ahhh there was the meltdown I was expecting, whoops things are going my way. I should get moving. I got into the launcher tube, grabbing the handles at either of my sides and locking my greaves into place. I almost felt butterflies in my stomach as I began to hear a countdown from my helmet. In the background I could still hear the other professors, mages, and alchemists bickering, one of them scoffing, "Ugh, what a cliché gimmick. Can't you think of anything original Erskine?"
The doc, to his credit, ignored the taunting and instead as the countdown nearly closed said, "If the suits vitals report any issues, I'm pulling you out of there."
I looked up as the bay doors on the launcher tube opened. I could just barely make out the asteroid from the bottom of the tube, but I could tell I was lined up.
"Got it."
