Quack had found herself on a campus. Which according to the child she had accompanied stated it's where people go to learn stuff and stuff about other stuff. Quack's life always led her to places she never would've gone otherwise.
According to her tiny comrade they needed help with their extra activity they usually do after class. They were a library attendant. Quack didn't usually have clientele this young but the little human insisted because no one else took their query seriously. So here Quack was ready to do their very best. Little did they know their best was may not actually be enough.
"Today we need to move the illusion section and the manifestation section."
Quack's current boss motioned to 4 floor to ceiling packed to the brim with tomes, books and scrolls. Mouth agape Quack looked over everything they were being sent to do. Well to be fair she'd be asked to do much harder she thought. A pair of gloves were thrust in her hands and she was instructed to keep them on whenever she was handling the books. Then the job progressed. Quack was directed around from what to pick up and where to put it. Everything was going relatively smoothly, but NO ONE HAD DECIDED TO TELL POOR QUACK HOW HEAVY BOOKS WERE! By lunch time Quack was heaving in their breath and sweating so much they had been forced to wear a poncho to protect the tomes.
"How much do these things weigh?!"
"Well our heaviest tome in illusion is around 75 pounds. Historically there were wizards that would get into competitions to see who could make the biggest tomes citing only the best wizards could handle the unruly beasts of books. "
"I think the Divines gave me a blessing when they made me stupid."
The kid laughed and pointed to the higher shelf.
"Speaking of the tome could you get it down for me Ducky?"
Quack followed their boss's outstretched finger and began sweating again. This time not for overexertion. Since they were blessed with stupid Quack didn't know how high up the book really was but it was far to high to try and move it with an audience.
"Alright I'll get it moved while you go eat your lunch! No arguing go go go go!"
They pushed their little boss out of the room and then turned to face one of their biggest challenges yet. First they had to tackle how to get to it. They put the rolling ladder into position and locked it into place. With that done she climbed up to be eye level with her foe. All 75 pounds of it. She went into to to and wrangle the book knowing this would end in disaster. Using as much might as she could muster the merfolk brought the tome to be against her chest. Taking a deep breath they began to heave trying to actually get the book off the shelf. Then all at once, it happened. Duck got the book to come of the shelf the force they had put into moving it tilted her backward and the added weight sent her flying.
"OOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!"
She curled around the book in an effort to protect it and made the ultimate sacrifice. Hurt her back real real real bad. Groan she tried to move but realized between her back and the weight of the book she was basically pinned. They gave thought to just staying here and waiting for their boss to get back. Then they thought about their boss being disappointed. Not an option. Quack pirate rule 827: They can never disappoint kids. With a few deep breaths they braced their hands against the book along with their tail. They began pushing against the tome and with the more might they put into the louder they got. Escalating into full blown screaming in the library.
FINALLY! THEY HAD LIFTED OFF THEIR CHEST! However their arms began to go wobbly. They began to panic trying to figure out where to put it. She'd been told old tomes are delicate and she figured you don't just put delicate things on the floor. As the tome started coming back down on her she braced herself for impact. Before the air got slapped out of them the book seemingly got lighter. That was when they noticed a small group of patrons also trying to help lift the tome. Doing some, unique maneuvers Quack and their new group of friends shuffled the tome to a cloth covered table. With that Quack rounded them all up into a hug.
"Beautiful! Now if anyone asks you were all wearing gloves."
